According to Lown, these unnecessary surgeries included a variety of procedures, such as stents for stable coronary disease, vertebroplasties for osteoporosis, hysterectomies for benign disease and more.
While Lown argues that these procedures have very little or no clinical benefit, the American Hospital Association (“AHA”) disagreed. The AHA said that delaying non-emergent care can have negative outcomes on patients.
Opinions fall on both sides regarding the Lown analysis. However, it is important to note scrutiny is a constant in healthcare.
It is essential to make sure that you are not performing any unnecessary surgeries or billing for anything unnecessary.
