Are Your Patients Impacted?

A recent warning from the Michigan Attorney General stated that a cyberattack against McLaren Health Care could impact a lot of patients.

A data breach that occurred in August is still causing issues.

A cybercriminal group, ALPHV, posted a message last week that McLaren data would be released unless a ransom payment was received.

McLaren is investigating. McLaren does not believe there is continued access to their system.

How can you help your patients?

Tell them the warning signs of someone using their healthcare data.

They should look for:

  • bills for services they did not receive,
  • bills or communications about prescription medicines they do not take,
  • calls about medical debt that they don’t owe,
  • insurance denials,
  • messages from health insurance companies that they’ve reached their benefit limit,
  • etc.

If they think their information has been stolen, they should change passwords, put alerts on their accounts and be aware of charges and insurance notices moving forward.

Cyber attacks continue to seek out protected health information, as it is incredibly comprehensive and valuable.

It is essential that you protect your patients’ healthcare information by having the required safeguards in place. It is also helpful to let patients know what to look for, in case their information was breached.

If you need help with your safeguards and policies and procedures, contact Rickard & Associates today.
