The World Health Organization (WHO) released ICD-11 earlier this year and is now encouraging all member countries to use ICD-11.

ICD-11 is the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases coding set. ICD-11 was released for evaluation and testing in 2016, after development began in 2007.

At least 35 countries are already using ICD-11.

ICD-10 was first released nearly 25 years ago by WHO. The United States implemented ICD-10-CM seven years ago. The United States is currently studying and evaluating the use of ICD-11.

There have been comparisons to ICD-10-CM to call out differences between the code sets.

In relation to the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10-CM, it appears that this transition may be easier. ICD-11 represents ICD-10-CM codes without modification much better than ICD-10 represented ICD-9 codes.

WHO believes that countries who have used a previous version of ICD and have highly sophisticated information systems may require 4 to 5 years to transition to ICD-11.

More research is needed to determine next steps regarding ICD-11. Planning is currently underway now that the official version has been released.
