A ransomware attack at Methodist McKinney Hospital is still under investigation. However, the ransom was not paid.

An unauthorized actor accessed systems and copied files that contained names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical history information, medical diagnosis information, treatment information, medial record numbers and health insurance information.

Who took the data?

The Karakurt data extortion group is responsible for the hack. It is likely that the information will be released on the dark web.

Cybersecurity breaches continue to wreak havoc on healthcare entities.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency announced that ransomware targeting healthcare has been exploiting SonicWall firewall vulnerabilities and through phishing attacks.

How can you protect your practice, your patients, and your data?

Ensure your security is up to date, but don’t rely on technology alone. Make sure that your policies regarding software updates and patches are enforced.

Perform thorough risk assessments to make sure you know where all devices are that access data and have ways to remotely control them.

Make sure that your staff is thoroughly trained on breach readiness and disaster recovery.

Your staff should be able to recognize phishing emails and have a way to report them quickly and efficiently.

Staff must also be trained on potential liability in the event of a breach.
