Software Hack Hits Close to Home

Rochester Medical Group in Rochester Hills, Michigan was affected by a nationwide software hack.

The breach was geared toward an Indiana medical company.

The medical software company reported that the personal information of 3.9 million people was exposed during a network hack that began May 7, 2015.

What information was exposed?

Names, addresses, birthdays, Social Security numbers, and health records.

The Indiana company announced that the attack on the main network and its NoMoreClipboard network began on May 7. The breach went undetected until May 26.

In that time, the hackers were able to get the information from 3.9 million patients from Concentra, Franciscan St. Francis Health Indianapolis, and Rochester Medical Group.

It is important for your practice to stay alert so that you can catch breaches quickly.

This breach hits close to home for many medical practices. A breach such as this could happen to any practice.

The lesson to be learned is that breaches are happening more frequently than ever and that any healthcare organization can be the victim of a software hack.

To prepare your practice against a breach, make sure that your HIPAA Risk Assessment is up to date and that your policies and procedures are followed by your staff. Complete regular training and audits to eliminate personnel and technology weaknesses.
