The plan states that the OIG has four main goals. The goals are:

  1. Protect people,
  2. Protect funds,
  3. Protect infrastructure, and
  4. Promote effectiveness of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) programs.

To protect people, the OIG is providing support to combat fraud schemes and provide awareness to the public about fraud and abuse.

The OIG is also auditing and evaluating the health and safety of HHS beneficiaries in health care settings.

To protect funds, the OIG is focusing on auditing and evaluating the use of COVID-19 response and recovery funds. The OIG is also investigating suspected fraud.

To protect infrastructure, the OIG is monitoring IT vulnerabilities and investigating cybersecurity threats.

To promote effectiveness, the OIG is conducting audits and evaluations of ongoing response and recovery efforts to ensure that recipients of HHS COVID-19 response and recovery funding achieve their applicable goals.

The OIG is also identifying successful practices and making recommendations to improve future responses. OIG is also evaluating how funding was spent and making recommendations for the future.
