Michigan has the most lenient laws regarding telemedicine for physicians.
Despite the favorable laws and increased reimbursements for telemedicine, many doctors are hesitant to adopt the practice.
Why?
Many reasons. A few include:
- Physicians are too busy to want to offer a new service,
- There is no uniformity in reimbursement,
- There are low reimbursement rates from some payers, and
- Physicians have a general unfamiliarity with the relatively new concept.
In Michigan, physicians are now able to prescribe controlled substances through telehealth services.
Telemedicine allows physicians to access a variety of patients, and often is a time saver for the physician.
Trinity Health has created a program to move toward telemedicine, as a way to improve care and decrease expenses.
Trinity’s program, Trinity Health At Home, has a video chat feature that enables patients to contact with nurses.
At Trinity, nurses train patients to use the telemedicine kit that includes devices to monitor weight, blood pressure and other information.
Many patients feel secure knowing that nurses are checking their vital signs on a daily basis.
Telehealth can help to prevent hospital readmissions.
